Aside from school lunch boxes and how to get picky kids to eat, the most common question I am asked is, what should I feed my baby?
Let me start by stating, I’m not an expert! I am just a mom doing my best and sharing what has worked for me.
There’s lots of conflicting information about when to start solids, how to introduce them, when to introduce them etc. I won’t go into all that. I spoke with our paediatrician early on so that when the time was right for Lexi I would know.
I had intended doing baby-led weaning with Lexi but I ended up going with the flow (which has pretty much been my entire parenting philosophy). I didn’t rely too heavily on purees because I had seen friends and family members struggling with older children adapting to textured foods. But I found it convenient having a few purees in the freezer for when we went out.
Feeding a baby can be messy, whether you’re spoon feeding purees or letting them explore and experiment themselves. Before every meal I used to put a few sheets of newspaper on the tiles under and around Lexi’s highchair. This made cleaning up and absolute cinch. Let’s face it, what mom has time to clean the floor after every meal?!
In fact, my neighbours often laughed at me because I would take the high chair outside and simply hose it down.
So, What Should I Feed My Baby?
Well, that’s entirely up to you! However, I can share with you a few of the purees that I used to regularly prepare.
Red Lentil, Carrot and Tomato Puree
2 tsp olive oil
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 large carrot, scrubbed and chopped
1/3 cup red lentils
1 tsp tomato paste
1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes, until softened but not browned.
2. Add the carrot and continue cooking for another 4 to 5 minutes.
3. Add the lentils, tomato paste and 2 cups of water.
4.Brings to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.
5. Drain the mixture, reserving the liquid.
6. Puree the solids in a food processor or blender until smooth, adding the leftover liquid 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
7. Serve at room temperature.
