Exercising As A Family

Did you know that families that exercise together have been found to have less stress responses than other people? Exercise is an important part of keeping yourself healthy, but how do you find the time to do it as a family? We regularly take Lexi with us to our gym during quiet times and let her do little weights. Here are some of the ways we fit in exercise as a family when we don't make it to the gym.

 

 

Use Gardening as a Workout

 

Gardening can be fairly strenuous work for a fully grown adult, so it's a great way to get some extra exercise in. You can assign everyone a job that is suited for their age and talents. Lexi loves weeding and watering. If you want to add a little extra flair to gardening, then you can add some dancing and singing to the mix. That will help to keep things light, and keep the kids happy and having a good time with you. Just because it’s important doesn’t mean that it has to be silent and foreboding.

Go For an After-Dinner Walk

 

In most families it’s pretty customary for everyone to scatter to their respective corners once dinner is done. After dinner walks are the answer to this. Once dinner is finished, go for a walk together. Walk around the block or further, either way, you're getting your heart rate up and spending time with your family.

 

 

Plan Family Outings Where Everyone Walks Together

 

We recently did a family outing at the Sterkfontein caves. It's a great adventure for little kids! I'd recommend the tour for kids from 3 years old. My 3 year old nephews loved it.

 

Another favourite walking outing of ours is our local botanical gardens, where we walk to the top of the waterfall.

 

We occasionally go on trips to places like the Drakensberg and Clarens so that we can enjoy the long, kid-friendly walks. The pictures in this post were taken in the Drakensberg a few years ago.

 

 

Make TV Commercials a Time for Fitness

 

For this last one, you don’t even have to leave your house. Just wait for the ads to come on, and then up and perform an exercise. If you like, you can even make it a game where someone gets to have control over which exercises the rest of the family has to do at the next break.

 

Lexi thought I was crazy when I told her not to skip the ads on YouTube! She got into it very quickly though and it has become a huge source of laughter. Our favourite is, how many jumping jacks can you do before the ad ends.
