Bring Hygge Into The Kitchen

May 8, 2020

As we head into winter here in the Southern Hemisphere I have been making more of an effort to bring some hygge and lagom into our home. Since I spend so much time in my kitchen it was was important that I bring hygge into the kitchen too.

Hygge is a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being and is regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture. Lagom is a Swedish word meaning "just the right amount". The word can be translated as "in moderation", "in balance", "perfect-simple", and "suitable" (in matter of amounts).

The kitchen is literally and figuratively the heart of our home. Most of the activity in our home is centered around the kitchen. So it is important to me that I apply both these concepts to our kitchen.

The Hygge Kitchen

Hygge is about companionship, particularly combined with food and a casual atmosphere. A hygge kitchen is not cluttered, nor is it fussy or extravagant. It is cosy, warm and welcoming.

Hygge is not things it is an atmosphere. However, there are a few items that can bring hygge into the kitchen.

Bring Hygge Into The Kitchen

Few things brighten up a space and add character and charm like a potted plant. If you’re on a budget or just need a quick way to add some hygge to your kitchen or dining area, try adding a few plants.

Warm drinks are the epitome of hygge. Create a cosy nook for making tea and coffee and display some beautiful tea cups or mugs. Now you're ready to pause and enjoy an afternoon fika (Swedish coffee break).

Add a rug to your kitchen space. It makes cold tiles more bearable in winter, brings comfort to the space and makes the kitchen more cosy.

The smell of a homecooked meal brings warmth and comfort and can brighten the worst of moods. When you don't have food cooking using a diffuser. Cinnamon, clove, orange blossom, nutmeg, rosemary and cedar tones create a wonderfully warm and soothing winter aroma that warm the home.

But hygge is more than 'things' it is an atmosphere of calm. It’s relaxed and at ease. It’s never fussy or overdone. A hygge way of life creates comfort, so in a way it’s a very nurturing mindset. You can consider working toward creating hygge as a kind of self-care and a form of love for others.

Ban electronics and create a nurturing environment for your family centered around meals. Family meals are a very important part of our day-to-day activities. You can read about that HERE.

Preparing meals at the end of the day can be stressful for most. To bring calm to the kitchen at the end of the day plan your meals. I have shared tips for effective meal planning that don't require a lot of time. A well stocked pantry can also remove a lot of the stress of preparing meals.

Enjoy Hygge With Hot Chocolate

Bring a feeling of hygge into your life immediately with this luxurious French hot chocolate.

INGREDIENTS

250g good quality milk chocolate

2 cups milk

½ cup cream

1 tsp vanilla extract (essence will not have the same level of flavour)

METHOD

Break the chocolate into pieces and place in a small pot. Set the pot over medium-low heat and add the milk, cream, and vanilla extract.

Stir until the chocolate comes to a low simmer and the drinking chocolate is completely smooth and slightly thickened.

It should be substantially thicker than hot chocolate but if it needs to be thinned add a little more milk 1 Tbs at a time.

Ladle into mugs, top with a marshmallow and enjoy immediately.

Serves 6

Remember, hygge is a state of mind and doesn't only apply to winter. Start practicing it now and enjoy the benefits the whole year.
