It’s no secret that kids love baking! So while everyone is home get the kids into the kitchen, let them bake, and indulge in this delightful raspberry and plum crumble.
Baking Is Educational
Cooking and baking together is a great family bonding time that kids enjoy. It’s also a wonderful educational experience.
Working side-by-side our kids are learning to work together and collaborate while spending time together. Giving them tasks makes them feel responsible without a huge amount of pressure. If your family is like ours, there’s usually a lot of laughter when we are together in the kitchen.
Baking is a science experiment. Just the process of mixing wet and dry ingredients to form a batter, or putting a wet mix into the oven and watching it rise a little while later, is a huge education for your child. You can discuss why the batter dries out and watch the steam escape your baking. Then there are questions like, why do eggs curdle? What happens when you add flour? What does sugar do?
Baking is a great way to practice maths skills, even from a young age. The process of counting how many eggs are needed in each recipe, or the muffin cases for lining the tin. Older children can read ingredients straight from the recipe book. Is your child learning fractions? Then baking is a perfect lesson. Learning measurements? Get out your scale and weigh your ingredients.
Not only is baking scientific and mathematical, it is art too! Decorating cookies and cakes, creating patterns with pastry, it’s all creative. While it’s tempting to intervene and express how we think kids should do it, we need to let it go and let them decide for themselves how they want to do it.
Remember… the process is more important than the end result! So embrace the mess. Cleaning up afterwards is an activity in itself. When it’s all done, sit down with your child and let them put on a tea party for you.
Raspberry and Plum Crumble
This is a particularly easy recipe if you are new to baking with your child. It’s easy and a great way to introduce younger children to mixing and measuring.
For the filling:
- 6 plums (I like the dark red ones), washed, quartered and stones removed
- 1 cup raspberries
- 1/3 cup caster sugar
- For the crumble:
- 1 heaped cup all-purpose flour
- 7 Tbs butter, cut into pieces
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius.Put the plums, raspberries, and caster sugar into a saucepan with 1Tbs water. Simmer for 5 minutes to soften the fruit.Combine the flour and butter and rub with your fingertips until it forms crumbs. Add the brown sugar and combine.Spoon the fruit mixture into a shallow baking dish. Then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.Bake for 20 minutes until the crumble is a pale golden colour.
