On Friday I announced on Instagram that I am getting serious about meat-free Monday. It’s something that we have practiced on and off for a long time, and last year we replaced our burger Friday’s with Fry’s Fridays (you must try their burgers!).
I’ve found that it is possible to experience the health benefits of plant-based eating without cutting out animal products completely. However, there are some greater issues that have been on my mind.
If you know me, you’ll know that I am passionate about environmental issues. I’ve recently become more aware of the CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations) and the poor air quality surrounding them. This was a massive motivator for our family to eat less meat.
Why am I doing meat-free Monday?
By doing meat-free Monday I am halving my greenhouse emissions – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that livestock production is responsible for 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
It will lessen my water and energy use – It takes over 15 000 litres of water to make 1kg of beef.
I want to protect nature and the oceans – Animal agriculture uses vast amounts of land (almost a third of arable land worldwide). This is why it is such a big cause of deforestation and desertification. So if you want to reduce the extinction of whole species – reducing your animal product intake is key.
I want to cut down on pollution – Have you noticed the foul smell in the air when you drive past a factory farm? The air around factory farms often contains a whole host of toxins at too-high levels. So, less factory farms, equals cleaner air.
Reducing your meat intake is a super simple way to help our planet. It’s also more effective than switching your car with a bicycle or taking a quick shower!
A plant-based diet is more economical – Eating in season, from local growers is not only cheaper, it is better for us and better for the environment.

This week we started with Mexican street style tacos using the Fry’s Family Foods (Fry’s) thick cut chunky strips. We’re crazy about the thick cut chunky strips and they are perfectly complemented by the Mexican flavours.
Mexican Street Style Tacos
Fry’s thick cut chunky strips
1/3 cup fresh orange juice
1 Tbs fresh coriander, finely chopped
1 Tbs freshly squeezed lime juice 1 tsp garlic, minced
2 tsp taco seasoning (alternatively, you can use 1 tsp ground cumin, 1/2 tsp dried coriander and salt to taste)
6 corn tortillas
1/2 white onion, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
fresh coriander for garnishing
Combine coriander, lime juice, garlic, and taco spice in a pan with a little oil and saute on medium high.
Add the Fry’s thick cut chunky strips and orange juice and cook for 8 minutes (until the Fry’s strips are heated through).
Heat corn tortillas on the grill or in a microwave.
Keep tortillas warm in a folded sheet of aluminum foil covered by a thick towel.
Add Fry’s thick cut chunky strips to each tortilla and top with tomato, white onion and coriander.
*My favourite addition is a few drops of smoky chipotle chilli sauce.
