Lexi had a cold last week. She was feeling miserable and listless. First thing she asked for was a detox bath. She already knows from previous experience that a detox bath aids in her recovery and helps her feel better faster. Lexi loves detox baths so much that we have made them a regular part of our routine.
Our children come in contact with an endless amount of impurities, toxins, poisons, pollutants, and other agents. These chemicals land on our skin, absorb into the fabrics we wear, and are breathed into our lungs. These are inevitable however, there are a few ways that we can reduce our exposure to these environmental impurities, and one of the best ways, is through taking a detox bath.
How to get started
The most important part of doing a detox bath, is that your child is hydrated (they should be anyway!). This is what makes it possible for them to reap all of the benefits of the bath. Sweating is the body’s natural way of detoxifying. Soaking in hot water can assist in pulling harmful toxins from the skin. Next, select your water additives. We add a cup of Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, and occasionally essential oils* (always in a carrier oil) especially if Lexi’s nose is blocked.
They Relieve Stress
For thousands of years, mankind has known that one of the most relaxing and soothing experiences that can be had is that of taking a warm, or hot bath. Children these days are stressed too! Heat loosens muscle tissues that have been clenched by stress, even children subconsciously carry stress in their shoulders, backs, legs, and neck muscles.
They Stimulate the Evacuation of Toxins
In daily modern life, the most common position for people is sitting. Even our children are spending more time sitting than ever. This means that toxins and other wastes can easily build up in the body causing blockages and other unpleasant ailments. In order to have a healthy body, it is important to work on clearing out the lymph system. One way this can be accomplished is through heating the body, making it easier for the lymph system to flow more freely.
Due to the acidic content of modern foods, inflammation in our bodies has reached epidemic levels. This affects children too. A long soak in warm or hot water can provide some relief by greatly reducing inflammation in the body.
A gentle, but firm rub while submerged can go a long way to improving circulation and arterial health. While this is fine for a normal detox bath, it is not recommended when your child is sick. During an infection, the body works hard to fight the infection and recover. A massage can be stimulating to the body at a time when rest is important.
*How to Safely Use Essential Oils in the Bath
Be cautious about using oils that are known to irritate the skin and mucous-membranes. Avoid cinnamon, clove, oregano, savory, spearmint, thyme (except linalool type), and wintergreen in the bath.
Always combine essential oils with a carrier oil first. You don’t want essential oils just to sit on top of the water, you want them dispersed throughout. The best way to do that is combine essential oils in a carrier oil first, like coconut, olive, sunflower or jojoba.
While it may be tempting to trickle essential oils into the bath when running the water, wait. The hot running water will cause the essential oils to escape the bath and scent the bathroom instead. To get the most from an aromatherapy bath, fill the tub and turn off the water first before adding essential oils for full aromatic effect. Stir the bath before climbing in to help circulate oils.
