Do you strew?
Strewing is to scatter or spread things on a surface. So what does this have to do with crafting for kids? Let me explain…
A few years ago I read a blog post, The Art of Strewing, by Jean Van’t Hul on her blog The Artful Parent. She explains how strewing in this context refers to casually, but strategically leaving things around for children to discover and explore. This is my ultimate trigger for creativity!
I don’t know about your children, but when I say to Lexi, "let’s do an activity" she refuses. Since I started practicing strewing with Lexi her creativity has grown. It’s amazing what children can come up with when left to their own devices!
As Lexi has grown, this has led to "tinkering". I no longer just strew with regular craft supplies like paint, glitter, glue etc. I have now created what Rachelle Doorley of Tinkerlab calls "maker spaces". This has meant trusting Lexi with things like a hammer and nails and a low temperature glue gun. As a result, Lexi has learnt to assess risk and be careful on her own, without me reminding her. And again, her creativity has reached new levels.
This week’s craft item was bottle caps. As usual, I left various items strategically lying around and left it up to Lexi. Here’s what she came up with:
To make bottle cap magnets you’ll need:
Sticker dots and an assortment of stickers
Felt tipped markers (if you are drawing on sticker dots)
Air drying clay
Low temperature glue gun
Paint your bottle caps with acrylic paint.
Stick on chosen stickers. Alternatively you can use coloured dot stickers and draw little pictures on them.
Lexi realised that the stickers weren’t visible on the purple paint and so she cut out white circles and glued them on. She realised afterwards that there were white glue dots in the craft cupboard. She was VERY upset that she wasted her time. But the result is still fabulous!
Fill the back of the bottle cap with air drying clay.
Using a low temperature glue gun, glue a magnet to the back of each bottle cap.
Looking forward to seeing everyone’s bottle cap magnets!
